Halfway There

Halfway between Southern City and MyFella's town happens to be a halfway town.  Quite literally one red light until the Love's Truckstop opened up a few months ago.  On one side of the road is a locally owned little joint, the type that is sometimes called a Dairy Bar in the South but has a small menu of comfort food.

MyFella had a work conference that happened to be in Southern City.  I wasn't able to get off work to keep Our Jamie that week so MyFella couldn't bring him early.

We planned with Sister, Sibling 2 of 8, to meet me on my day off that week at the dairy bar so I could bring Our Jamie on to Southern City for our weekend.  I got there first and watched for Sister to drive up, for Our Jamie to come in.  I half hid just inside the door to say "Surprise!" and told him after lunch he would go with me. A few of his teenage nieces had rode with them and had lunch.

One table over was a man probably not too much older than me.  Maybe 60 or so.  I saw him and his lunch companion but didn't pay them any attention really, with my table full of kids, MyJamie, Sister.  He had ordered ice cream in a cup, a soft serve sundae.  The man got up and handed it to MyJamie.

MyJamie was a very good man in a lot of ways but he didn't like to share, and certainly not ice cream.  He was very excited with his surprise.
