The Van

Then one night I was at work when MyFella called.

"I've waited until it's all over to call you.  They left MyJamie on the van today.  He's ok, we're at home."

They had a field trip to a baseball game in a nearby town and somewhere on the ride home MyJamie had fallen asleep and slipped down.  The two escorts didn't see Stevie, forgot he was on there, and let everyone off at their homes except MyJamie.  They locked the van up and left for the day.

The father said to MyFella, "Is he here with you?" and MyFella said he knew, in that instant he knew.

He jumped in his truck and started to town placing two calls - one to the cell phone of the police chief to have someone meet him there and one to the director of the skill center.  She didn't come but sent an employee who had trouble finding the key which they finally produced when the policeman and MyFella agreed on busting the window out.

MyFella said MyJamie acted like he didn't know what the fuss was about, he was sleepy from his nap and although it was June it had not been a very hot day.  They went to the ER who said he was OK and called the appropriate authorities.  First thing the next morning the state agencies were calling the parents.

One year later on allegations of misbehaving we believed were mostly faked they kicked MyJamie out of the skill center.  While I know MyJamie would be stubborn, he would never ever condone laying down in a floor and refusing to do something.  MyJamie loved to be clean and he would not lay down in a floor. In all my years of knowing him he never laid down in a floor.

For about a year MyJamie stayed home with his parents until I believe the social worker realized they had let him fall through their cracks.  It was late in the year when a social worker started calling, insisting they had to come check on him, and I said "Oh, they've got themselves an audit and they haven't followed up on him.  That's why they're insisting."  Didn't change anything, the mother finally let them in, when the social worker claimed that MyJamie could go back with a helper.  The mother said nobody ever said anything about him going back and she would be glad to pull out the letter they sent home with him. But he would not go back there anyway, no he would not.

So the social worker pivoted to they partner with those companies that have home help and could hire someone to spend the days with him. So that's how he ended up with his favorite Sister Sibling 2 showing up every day to spend the day with him.  She took CPR classes and kept a log of where they went and what they did and he thought she hung the moon and the stars.
